Neuberg Minster and Abbey

Neuberg an der Mürz

Magnificent Gothic building and jewel of the upper Mürz Valley with an imposing hall church. The Gothic cloister, the Renaissance high altar and the extremely imposing wooden roof truss are particularly worth seeing.

The Münster Neuberg

The imposing hall church - the minster, today also popularly known as the "cathedral in the village" - is an admirable building not only for art connoisseurs. Like all Cistercian churches, the church is dedicated to the coronation and ascension of Maria. When Duke Otto der Fröhliche intended to found a monastery in 1327, the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz monastery supported him. As a result, the first gothic uniform hall church building in Austria in the nave and choir was erected in 169 years of construction. Particularly noteworthy is the cloister of the minster, which is the only completely preserved Gothic one in Styria. The cloister with the pictures of 38 abbots is just as worth seeing as the Renaissance high altar and the chapter house with the donor's crypt. The remains of Duke Otto der Fröhliche and his family rest in it. With the abolition of the monastery by Emperor Joseph II in 1786, after 469 years, a changeful monastery life came to an end.

The unique roof structure

The huge, Gothic wooden roof truss from the 15th century, which in terms of size and construction is a unique example of the carpentry art of that time, is worth seeing. 1.100 m³ of larch wood were processed without the use of iron nails. The roof structure can be viewed as part of a guided tour.
