Winter circuit Breiteggerweg
This winter hiking trail leads us over the historic Calvary with its beautiful wayside shrines to the Breitegger Church, which gives the round tour its name. It captivates with beautiful views of the snow-covered apple orchards and vineyards as well as in the direction of Weiz in the Graz mountain region up to the Schöckl, the local mountain of Graz.
The Breitegg winter circuit is one of the many
hiking trails in St. Ruprecht an der Raab that are also particularly suitable in winter. This winter circuit in
St. Ruprecht an der Raab is particularly charming in the morning hours, when the snow or frost glistens beautifully on the fields and orchards and the sun makes the landscape glow.
The Breitegg church is located on the ridge of hills that leads into the Weiz region. Along wayside shrines with Stations of the Cross we reach the Calvary Church in Breitegg. A wooden tower was replaced here in the 18th century by a wooden prayer house. Today's church "Zum GegeiĂźelten Heiland" (The Flagellated Saviour) was built on this site from 1845 to 1850, modelled on the Weizberg church.

Route planner
- From the main square of St. Ruprecht an der Raab, the central starting point of the hike, the first part of the trail leads us past the parish church in a northerly direction to the Spitalkreuz, a prominent road junction, where we continue straight ahead.
- A few metres after the Spitalkreuz, we turn half-left onto Breitegger Straße, which we now follow. The beautiful wayside shrines and enchanting views of the wintry surroundings of St. Ruprecht an der Raab, characterised by dense forests alternating with vineyards and apple orchards as well as fields, are companions on this climb to Breitegg.
- Enjoy the sun glistening in the snow or frost on the fields and orchards. We walk on a cleared road here, but it can still be icy in places along the way.
- At the end of the ascent, we can see the distinctive towers of the Breitegg church from afar, which is also popular for weddings. When we arrive at the ridge near the church, we can well understand this, for it is truly a magical spot that awaits us here.
- An excellent tip for a stop is the Gansrieglhof, which can be reached by following the road for a little more than 1 km. The Buschenschank is one of the best Buschenschanken in Styria and has been a member of the "Ausgezeichneten Buschenschanken Steiermark" for many years. Watch out for the opening hours in winter!
- But now back to our hike: Immediately after the Breitegg church we turn left and follow the road downhill past beautiful family homes and apple and wine farms. After about 1.5 km, we turn left again and soon cross another village street.
- From here we leave the asphalted and cleared road and hike through a small piece of forest, field, meadows and over a small stream.
- Good footwear is essential here and extra care is needed as it can be icy. If there is a lot of snow, snow shoes are an advantage for this small section.
- Enjoy the untouched winter nature and the silence. Soon (at the "Harthof") we come back to an asphalted road, which we follow past the cemetery back to our hiking starting point.
