Sulberg-Round from the Nechnitz

Open
A leisurely hike around the Nechnitz plateau - with views of the Rote Wand, into the Mur valley and from the Schöckl to eastern Styria.
The tour starts on the Nechnitz, a plateau between the Passailer Kessel and the Teichalm. On the Nechnitz there are two very cosy establishments with good cuisine - the Frankenhof and the Gasthof Haider - for a stop before or after the tour.

From the Nechnitz, the easy forest trail leads counterclockwise almost all the way to the Rechberg. Then head up to the left and past a few farms towards Sulberg. This is now also the steepest part of the hike. You should definitely make the short detour up to the Sulberg cross, as there is a cosy place to rest or have a snack here with a truly wonderful 360 degree view!

The rest of the trail leads along forest and country roads through several hamlets with farms and pastures back to the Nechnitz.

The trail can also be followed from Rechberg (car park at GH Brandhof), in which case it is about 3 kilometres longer.

More information

  • We start at GH Frankenhof, should we stop at GH Haider, we start there and simply walk along the country road to Frankenhof.
  • Walk up the road to the left and after a few hundred metres you will reach a beautiful rest area with a view of the Rote Wand.
  • We walk along trail no. 740 or orientate ourselves by the trail markings "Rechberg".
  • At the so-called "Red Cross", continue left (or take a detour to the right up the Harter Berg).
  • At the Pölzweber homestead (there is a sign on the right indicating the GUST mobile "GU 1549"), walk a short distance up the gravelled path to the next homestead with a large gate.
  • From here the path leads out to the right across the meadow down to the farmsteads in Tulwitzviertel.
  • Follow the markings across a farm and now walk steeply up towards Sulberg (markings: "Sulberg" or "Nechnitz").
  • At the top, at a passage for hikers, we keep to the right and walk the short distance up to the Sulberg cross on the large meadow.
  • We now return to the Nechnitz via the same path, but continue in the direction of "Nechnitz".
  • The forest path leads past small hamlets.
  • Watch out: at the farm of the Christandl family, vulgo Holzschuh, turn right and follow the markings across the farm.
  • The level path leads over several passages across the pasture before turning left up the hill.
  • Now we can already see the Haider Inn at the bottom - our next destination.
  • From the Haider Inn we walk along the main road back to the Frankenhof Inn.

Start on Rechberg at the Brandhof Inn: trail no. 740 to the junction at the Pölzweber farm, we go up to the right and continue as described above.

If you have time and feel like it, you can make a detour up to the Harter mountain at the "Red Cross". The path is well marked.
