Falkenstein - via ferrata in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park

Open
Brand new via ferrata facility in the Mürzer Oberland nature park in Upper Styria near the valley with various climbing options, one of the top via ferratas in the entire region and in Styria. The via ferrata facility set up by the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park and supported by the Edelweiss and Bergverein branches of the Alpenverein is divided into two main routes and several exercise options: Otto's solar plates places C/D, rest B and C Heli's Incredible Pillar: Positions D and E (!) Practice Via Ferrata A and B Here is a short video with impressions of the via ferrata system and a 3D panorama of the entrance. There is also a climbing garden to the left of the climbing facilities, please do not kick any stones when you get off!   ATTENTION: Never park along the cycle path or in the marked wood storage areas or along the state road!!! There are 2 marked, smaller parking spaces directly at the access as well as a large, free parking space in Krampen, approx. 15 minutes from the access and easily accessible via the cycle path.

The via ferrata facility is divided into two main routes and several exercise options.

The climb over Ottos' Sonnenplatten, named after Otto Neubacher, the man behind the idea, is the main route with a total length of around 400 meters and overcomes a difference in altitude of 140 metres. The difficulty is in short sections in the C/D area, the rest is B and C. In the lowest part of this climb there is a small practice loop that can also be used as an emergency exit (difficulty A, B). The highlight of this facility is definitely the suspended rope bridge over the Krampengully.

The climbing variant over Helis' incredible pillar, which was named in memory of the Neuberg mountain rescuer legend Heli Mück, has a few extremely difficult individual sections in the lower area (difficulty D and E!). This path is therefore reserved for via ferrata connoisseurs and, after about 150 meters of climbing, joins the main route mentioned above.

In the upper part of the facility, a small panoramic summit tour can be completed, which was set up especially for families. All the climbs have several emergency exits, and the local mountain rescue service has also developed a rescue plan.

More information

From the large P near Krampen we first follow the main road on the Mürztalradweg R5 into the valley for about 15 minutes before we turn right into the forest at a wayside shrine (stream, bridge).

Now up along a small stream and under the walls that are already visible (here you can see the 3D panorama of the entrance) either keep slightly left to the difficult via ferrata variant (Heli's unbelievable pillar) or right up to the entrance of the main climb (Otto's Sonnenplatten).

Follow the insurance uphill (see topo e.g. in the new via ferrata guide by A. Jentzsch) and from the exit via a forest path to the Falkensteinalm.

Now return to the starting point via the marked path. Rapid descent: https://regio.outdooractive.com/oar-steiermark/de/tour/wandern/schnellabstieg-falkenstein-klettersteig-im-naturpark-muerzer-oberland/800176257/
