Stage 08 Styrian Wine Country Cycling Route Bad Radkersburg - Leibnitz

On this stage of the Wine Country Steiermark Cycle Route, the Mur River – Austria’s second-largest river and namesake of the famous Mur Cycle Path – will be our constant companion. It leads us from the South-East Styrian Hill Country Wine Road to the famous Südsteirische Weinstraße South Styrian Wine Road and the scenic Sausal Wine Road. But the route doesn’t just take us to the "wine capital" of Steiermark – as Leibnitz is often called – it also winds through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Mur wetlands between Bad Radkersburg and Mureck, and through charming, romantic villages near the Slovenian border.

Nature and the art of living are the focus of today’s stage of the Styrian Wine Country Cycling Route, as the first half leads us along the Mur, which here also marks the border with Slovenia. Our route winds its way through the Gosdorfer Murauen Natura 2000 protected area, which at nearly 50 kilometres in length is the largest alluvial forest in Steiermark. The second half is dedicated to entering and experiencing the Südsteiermark Nature Park, with the stage finishing in Leibnitz – the wine capital of Steiermark and gateway to the Südsteiermark.

From Bad Radkersburg we follow the Murradweg R2 upstream, though the ride remains pleasantly gentle as it takes us through idyllic villages and floodplain landscapes of the UNESCO Biosphere Park, past fields of pumpkins and maize. The fact that pumpkin seed oil is becoming just as defining a culinary product as wine is evident from the attractions along the route. The Sixt oil mill, with its unique waterwheel press located just off our path, offers fascinating insights into the production of Steiermark’s “green gold.”

In the historic small town of Mureck, another gem awaits: the Mureck floating mill, set amidst the Mur wetlands. With its adjoining restaurant serving typical Styrian cuisine, it often tempts cyclists to linger longer than planned. Just a few kilometres after Mureck, near Vogau-Ehrenhausen – the starting point of the Southern Styrian Wine Trail – we reach the Genussregal Südsteiermark. Here, in a lively and engaging setting, visitors can learn how products such as honey, wine, and vinegar are made, which methods are used, and which people stand behind the quality and regional character.

Continuing along the Mur, our route leads towards Leibnitz, where we join the Sausal Wine Trail. Before entering Leibnitz, however, we branch off to the left at Wagna – known for the Roman museum Flavia Solva – onto the Römerradweg R6. Skirting around the town, we soon arrive at one of the most beautiful main squares in Steiermark, with its many cafés and shops.

In the Thermen- und Vulkanland region of Styria, Eastern Styia, and South and WestStyria, the GenussCard opens the door to over 200 excursion destinations when staying at one of the 160 or so GenussCard partner establishments. The S51 rapid transit line accompanies us on this stage as far as Spielfeld, where we connect with the Southern Railway line of the ÖBB Austrian Federal Railways and the S5 rapid transit line to Graz. This also makes it easy to reach stage locations in the east and south-east, such as St. Ruprecht an der Raab, Hartberg, or Fehring south of the Loipersdorf spa. In this way, short-stay visitors can conveniently split the Styrian Wine Country Cycling Route across several holidays.
