Habring via Schalenstein

From the Murtal to the Murberge - a hike like back then. Travel comfortably by train or car, enjoy the hike and then eat well in St. Georgen ob Judenburg in the Murtal region.
The Murberge are a mountain range bordering the Mur to the south and the Wölzer Tauern to the north. A small and very fine hiking area, starting from St. Georgen ob Judenburg, which impresses with well-marked hiking trails, cosy resting places and tranquillity. The village of St. Georgen ob Judenburg has around 900 inhabitants and is located directly on the S 36 Murtal motorway and the train line from Leoben to Klagenfurt. Many hikers only know the village from travelling through, but it is well worth stopping here and spending the day in the region. The centre of the village has been attractively redesigned thanks to the new subway for the S 36, and you can enjoy the delicacies of the "Murtal Eis" ice cream factory, among other things. The hike over the Schalenstein to the Habring is a scenic and comfortably ascending tour along forest roads that is suitable all year round. What the Schalenstein is all about and its significance can be found on the information boards at the "Schalenstein" rest area. Once you have reached the Habring, you should make time for the "St. Oswald-Blick", which is only a few minutes away from the Habringsattel and offers a beautiful view to the north.

More information

From Judenburg via the B317 (14 km, approx. 15 minutes)

From Murau via the B96 and B317 (32 km, approx. 25 minutes)

We start at the village square of St. Georgen ob Judenburg (1), 734 m, and walk slightly downhill through the village. After crossing the Mur bridge and the railway tracks, we see the yellow signposts at the crossroads. We keep left and follow the tarmac road, which initially runs parallel to the tracks and then leads slightly uphill to Nußdorf (2), 747 metres. Shortly before the village centre, we turn left and follow the asphalt road to continue uphill to Gintersdorf after approx. 500 m on the right. The next 2 kilometres climb steadily uphill on gravel roads and offer beautiful views of the Mur valley. We reach the farm vlg. Unterer Schaffer and subsequently the farm vlg. Oberer Schaffer farm (3), 1041 m. Continue along the gravel road between the farm buildings until you see a well and a small wooden house shortly after a left-hand bend.  At this junction we turn left or keep straight on and follow the forest road for about 1.5 kilometres until we reach the Schalenstein viewing point (4), 1350 metres. Continue straight on and walk comfortably uphill along the forest road until you reach the Habringsattel (5), 1406 metres. A few metres from the Habringsattel, you can see the start of the path to the summit on the left. The path leads a little steeper uphill through the forest until we reach our destination, the Habring (6), 1497 m, just before the summit.

Once you have reached the summit, you should take some time to enjoy the "St. Oswald view", which is only a few minutes away from the Habringsattel. The way back is via the ascent route.

An alternative descent leads via the Nußmoaralm to St. Georgen - see hike "Habring via Nußmoaralm"
