St. Martin's Parish Church

Hirschegg-Pack

The parish church of Pack with its shining yellow outer walls is a remarkable church. The Baroque high altar is adorned with a picture of St. Martin, the parish patron of Pack, who is sharing his soldier's cloak with a beggar.

In the middle of the small mountain village of Pack stands the parish church of St. Martin, whose outer walls shine in a light yellow. Upon entering the church through the tower entrance, one is captivated by the beautiful, well-proportioned space.

The baroque high altar features an image of St. Martin, the patron saint of the parish, in its center. The saint is depicted giving half of his soldier's cloak to a beggar. In the background of the image, one can see the Brandkogel and the castle, which at that time still had a tower. On either side of the altar painting stand life-sized wooden statues of St. Peter and St. Paul, the second patron of the parish. Next to these apostles, separated by a column, are the statues of St. John of Nepomuk, the martyr of the confessional secret, and St. Peter the Martyr.

Above the altar painting, Count Raimund had the coat of arms of Saurau and his name inscribed: "Raimundus Comes de Saurau". Under his rule, the church was rebuilt and baroque-style from 1766 to 1770.

The master builder who created this lovely little church is not named. It was probably the mason Johann Ebner from Voitsberg and the carpenter Peter Schriebl from Ligist. Both took over the reconstruction of the castle after it burned down in 1768.
