Schell Collection

Graz

Discover mysterious key worlds full of history and artistic mechanics.

The Schell Collection in Graz is considered the largest specialized collection in the world for locks, keys, chests, and iron art casting. Spread over approximately 2,500 m², more than 13,000 objects from different epochs and cultures can be seen.

Founded by Hanns Schell, the collection evolved from simple padlocks into an internationally recognized collection. Ancient security systems, artistic boxes, and ethnological exhibits from Africa and Asia reflect the diversity of the collection.

The exhibition is clearly arranged and conveys historical developments as well as intricate mechanisms. In addition to the permanent exhibition, interactive elements ensure that even younger visitors gain insights into the world of locks and keys.

The museum is housed in the Palais Herberstein at Wiener Straße 10 in the Graz Lend district, providing a fitting historical context for the museum. And who knows: perhaps you will even discover the key to happiness here.
