Maria Lankowitz Castle

Maria Lankowitz

The origins of Maria Lankowitz Castle go back to the middle of the 15th century. While it used to be a prison and also a museum, it is now a residential castle.

The inner courtyard is used for events.

The castle is a three-storey, regular four-wing building with a rectangular ground plan, which in its present form dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The four wings enclose a large colonnaded courtyard, whose arches are partly walled up but have been uncovered in recent times. A small ridge turret rises above the entrance front and serves as a clock and bell tower. The round-arched, rusticated main gate is located on a square tower projecting uniaxially from the castle building. Above the main gate are the coats of arms of the former owners and a sundial. The castle chapel is decorated with frescoes and has a princely gallery.

Until the end of the 17th century, the castle was a fortified complex surrounded by a wide moat, which was crossed by a drawbridge and, from the 16th century, by a wooden bridge. The defensive wall behind the moat was reinforced with round towers, while in front of the moat was a sloping glacis. Beyond the glacis was a large farm building with a horseshoe-shaped ground plan and the one-storey steward's house. Nothing remains today of the defence wall, the moat or two projecting towers at the corners of the eastern castle wall.
