Krems Castle Ruins
VoitsbergAs we drive through the rows of Krems, the impressive ruins of Krems Castle greet us overhead. Once, this structure was one of the most important castles in the city of Voitsberg, as its location to the east served to warn the city of Voitsberg against enemies and attacks.
The castle was built in the 16th century by Earl Herberstein as magnificently equipped living quarters. Archduke Johann inherited the ruins in 1817. In 1989 just as it was left to go to ruin the charitable children’s and youth organisation ‘Licht im Leben‘ bought the historical fortification. Since then numerous preservation measures have been taken. Since 1993 with the support of the castle association ‘Krems in der Steiermark‘. The charming ambience of the historical walls is an ideal location for cultural events as well as school and holiday projects. Viewings are available by appointment.
The castle is open to individual visitors on the following holidays:
On Whit Monday and on National Day, the castle gates are open to all visitors from 2 PM in good weather.
Additionally, guided tours are possible by prior arrangement.
The castle can be viewed from the outside at any time.
