The Schlossbergbühne Kasematten, often simply called "Kasematten," is one of the most distinctive open-air venues in Graz. It is located within the historic walls of the Schlossberg, in the former entourage and casemate section of the fortification, bridging the past with cultural present.
With a capacity of around 1,700 standing or 999 seated guests, the stage provides space for large concerts, cabaret, galas, or festivals. The stage itself measures approximately 100 m², and the event area is 462 m². Since 2017, a glazed rear wall, in addition to a mobile roof, ensures that events can take place even in variable weather conditions.
Historically, the stage is deeply rooted: It was developed into an open-air stage starting in 1937, and since then, operas, theater, and music performances have taken place here – among other things, Beethoven's "Fidelio" was performed at the opening. Over the years, renovations have been made, box rooms integrated, and technical adjustments implemented to meet modern requirements.
The special thing about the Kasematten is the combination of architecture, atmosphere, and connection to the city: The old walls, niches, and vaults provide a dreamy ambiance, and the view over the rooftops of Graz becomes part of the experience.
