Graz ‘primeval forest’

Graz

A small wilderness in the middle of the Graz urban area.

The Graz "Urwald" (jungle) is a green island in the middle of the city, operated by the Nature Conservation Youth Styria on Messendorfberg in Graz-St. Peter. Over 35 tree species grow on three hectares, from local classics to exotic rarities like a giant sequoia and a resin cedar – remnants of a former imperial and royal tree nursery.

Since 1993, the site has been a place where knowledge of nature can be experienced. Guided tours and hands-on activities make the diversity of the area tangible. The mix of city and wild nature is unique. Orchard meadows, old tree giants, and dense underbrush transform the Urwald into an almost jungle-like microcosm.

A wooden pavilion showcases the projects and events currently taking place. Car? Not a chance – the Urwald is only accessible on foot or by bus and tram.

This hidden natural paradise in the heart of Graz is ideal for anyone who wants to explore the city from its green side.
