Franciscan Monastery

Graz

Historical monastery and church in the center of Graz.

The Franziskanerkirche Graz (Franciscan church) and the adjacent Franziskanerkloster (Franciscan Monastery) are among the oldest religious buildings in the city and have marked the first monastery in the Graz metropolitan area since 1239. A defining feature is the imposing tower with a square base and an octagonal upper part topped with the characteristic onion dome from the 17th century – a landmark that continues to shape the cityscape today and originally served as part of the city fortifications.

The architecture harmoniously combines a Gothic hall church, the regotized interior furnishings, and modern elements. Particularly noteworthy is the Gothic cloister with its diagonal floor plan, medieval lancet windows, round and pointed arches, as well as the fresco fragments from the 16th century. Also special is the Jakob Chapel with a late Gothic portal that conveys an authentic medieval atmosphere.

Inside the church, a filigree ribbed vault and light-filled choir windows characterize the space, complemented by an organ from 2004 by the Potsdam company Alexander Schuke. The church and the monastery offer a tranquil oasis in the midst of the city. Through a gate next to the main entrance, one can access a quiet inner courtyard that is freely accessible during the day.

A stroll through the church and the monastery reveals the blend of sacred history and contemporary spirituality, Gothic architecture, artistically designed library spaces, and unique soundscapes.

By the way: The area between the Franciscan Monastery and the Mur River is referred to as the Calves' Quarter. In the 16th century, Graz butchers drove their livestock past the monastery walls to slaughter, while numerous small traders settled in the surrounding area. It is easy to understand that the monks complained about the noise and smell at that time.
