The Burghofspiele Voitsberg presents “Hole in the Belly”, a play by Gundula von Trebitsch, that addresses a highly sensitive and often silenced topic: abortion. Three women meet in a surreal space, a box with stools, a cloth, and a candle. They have actually come for group therapy, but before it begins, they start telling their own stories. Thus, a conversation emerges about guilt, shame, self-determination, and society's view of women who choose against a pregnancy.
The characters could not be more different: Silvie, young, vulnerable, and full of dreams; Mona, who finds courage and strength for herself and her children; Theresa, the manager whose struggle for survival reaches to her core. Between them lie fractures, facades, and abyss, yet also much humor. For where there is pain, laughter is sometimes allowed.
Author Gundula von Trebitsch describes her work as a reaction to a societal development that she views critically. Her play reminds us that decisions surrounding pregnancy are never made lightly. “Hole in the Belly” is theater that touches, poses questions, and provides space for reflection.
The performance takes place in Voitsberg in Styria and is part of the diverse cultural offerings in the Graz Region. The play is recommended for ages 16 and up!
