Special guided tour: The writing room of the Reiner monks

Gratwein-Straßengel

Experience how books were created in Styria in the Middle Ages in the Graz Region.

What did a book look like 500 years ago? Who wrote it - and with what? On the special guided tour ‘The Writing Room of the Rein Monks’ at Rein Abbey, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of medieval book art. On 9 August at 14:00, the past comes to life - in the heart of the Graz Region.

Before the invention of printing, every book was unique and handwritten. Monks in monasteries spent days, weeks, sometimes years putting texts onto parchment with pen and ink. How exactly did this work? Find out on this exciting tour of the historic monastery library of the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world.

You can look forward to:

  • stories about the scribes and illuminators of the Middle Ages
  •  original writing instruments, inks and colours
  •  insights into artistic illuminations with gold and pigments
  •  a special atmosphere within the old monastery walls

Meeting point: 14:00 in front of the monastery shop
Ticket: available from the monastery shop, no registration required

The event is ideal for anyone who wants to experience history up close - whether as a family, culture enthusiasts or history fans. And, of course, for anyone looking for a special excursion in Styria.
