La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi - Melodramma in three acts (1853) I Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave In Italian with German surtitles.

An armchair and a few curtains - that's all star director Peter Konwitschny needs to create an unstoppable maelstrom. His legendary production of La traviata returns to the stage of the Graz Opera House for the last time. With a clear focus on the title heroine, Konwitschny tells the tragic love story of the terminally ill Parisian courtesan with incomparable intensity.

Violetta Valery is the center of Parisian amusement society, but a shadow lies over her seemingly carefree life. She is terminally ill. At a party, she meets the shy Alfredo. The two fall in love. Hoping to start a new life once again, she turns her back on her former existence and moves to the country with him. However, the relationship is on shaky ground.
Alfredo's father puts pressure on Violetta to end the relationship so as not to damage the family's good reputation. She gives in to the pressure, Alfredo is devastated - and Violetta's illness progresses inexorably. Alfredo realizes too late the real reason for her departure.

Created as a co-production with the English National Opera in 2011, Peter Konwitschny's production has lost none of its power to this day.
Lost none of its power. The unstoppable decline of the protagonist, whose tragic demise Verdi masterfully foreshadows in the overture, is followed as if through a burning glass. The internationally acclaimed production also marks the return of James Rutherford, who already appeared in the role of Giorgio Germont at the premiere, to Graz Opera. The stylistically accomplished Verdi conductor Matteo Beltrami will once again conduct the production.
