From September 19 to 20, 2026, Graz's city center will transform into a festival of folk culture. The Aufsteirern Festival showcases across numerous squares and courtyards how lively and typically Styrian tradition and zest for life are. Folk dance clubs perform on stages, brass groups play music, choirs sing, artisans present traditional craftsmanship techniques, and the scent of regional delicacies fills the air.
On Saturday, the Aufsteirern kicks off in earnest. Even in the morning, music groups, dance formations, and craft stands fill the city center. The main square becomes a stage for brass groups, while the Färberplatz is entirely dedicated to handicrafts. Culinary delights dominate the Mariahilferplatz: from beet bean salad to Schilcher, typical specialties from Styria are available.
Around 2,500 participants, including clubs, music groups, and craftsmen, demonstrate the diversity of Styrian customs. Whether it's a children's program in the castle courtyard or herbal experts explaining local plants, the weekend is packed with numerous small and large program highlights.
The event takes place regardless of the weather – whether sunny or rainy, the celebration will go on. Admission is free!
As the city center becomes a grand stage, trams will not run through the main square or Herrengasse; a replacement bus service will be in effect!
