Circular hike, Birkfeld

The Joglland circular route leads from Birkfeld to Zeiseleck in the east, the return route leads along the attractive gorge path along the Miesenbach with its numerous bridges.
The market town of Birkfeld connects the two regions of Joglland-Waldheimat and Almenland Nature Park in Eastern Styria and is located in the upper Feistritztal. The exposed location of the place was already described by Peter Rosegger: “And out in the lowlands, on a green hill, lies the stately Birkfeld”. In the town center you will find the historic Birkenstein Castle, which is inhabited by the Tacoli family, but it is possible to visit the castle courtyard. Birkfeld is also known as the home of the music group “Edlseer”, to whom the “Edlseer Homat hiking trail” is dedicated. Many guests reach the town via the Feistritztal cycle path or with the Feistritztalbahn. By hiking to Zeiseleck, located in the forest, you get to know the east of the municipality of Birkfeld, a beautiful landscape with well-kept cultivated areas and promising places. The way back leads over the “Klammweg” along the Miesenbach, which is very attractive for hiking thanks to numerous bridges, underpasses and crossings with ford stones. The path can be walked without major difficulties, but requires a bit of fitness due to its length.

Start: Main square Birkfeld
  • We start at the main square, walk past the church and along the footpath across the cemetery grounds down to the valley floor.
  • We cross the pedestrian bridge and turn right into Edlsee-Straße.
  • At the large crossroads, we turn left towards “Hartberg/Pöllau”. We cross the Feistritz bridge and then immediately turn right again.
  • After a few meters, we turn left onto a side road and continue uphill.
  • At the end of the asphalt road, at a crossroads, we keep to the right, uphill and along the path we come to a wooden and stone construction.
  • We follow the narrow path no. 3 uphill, keeping to the right at a wooden fence.
  • We continue along the forest path to a resting place by the stream.
  • We continue uphill along the edge of the forest, reach a farm and walk directly under the stable bridge.
  • Along the asphalt road, past the “Am Sonnenhang” signpost, we walk to a crossroads and keep to the right.
  • After approx. 900 meters we reach the next crossroads with a large wooden pilgrimage board. We turn left and walk uphill to Sonnleiten.
  • Opposite the village sign “Sonnleiten” we turn left into the road and walk about 400 meters.
  • We pass the house with the number 53 and a little way across the meadow and then see the start of a forest path.
  • Now we follow the markings up through the forest to the Hahn horse farm.
  • After the house, continue left along the asphalt road. After a few minutes we find a yellow signpost on the right (“Weg-Nr. 5”). This is where the detour to the summit begins.
  • We walk along trail no. 5 until we reach a crossroads, where we keep right. We walk along trail no. 15 via the Nandl Loch to the Zeiseleck summit cross in the forest (1,078 m).
  • For the way back, we take the same path to the forest road and continue downhill to the right.
  • We follow the markings through the forest and come to a beautiful meadow with a view of the Wildwiesenwarte.
  • We continue downhill along the gravel road and turn left at the crossroads.
  • We walk along the asphalt road until we reach the houses in Hinterleiten.
  • After the “Hinterleiten” signpost, we continue slightly uphill, then turn right downhill.
  • We pass between the house and the stable and walk downhill until the asphalt road ends after a few houses.
  • We stay on the gravel road, which leads steadily downhill and meets the gorge path directly. From now on, we can easily follow the signs through the gorge.
  • After the “Außeregg” signpost, we leave the road and continue along the gorge path. It goes uphill and downhill to the gorge path exit.
  • We now follow the road to Birkfeld and come back to the Feistritz bridge after Gschaid and follow the path we already know back to the center of Birkfeld.
The Felber café-pastry shop in the town center is known for its cakes and tarts, and its chocolate specialties also come from its own factory.
