Kreiskogel

The little brother of the Zirbitzkogel Hiking from A to Z in the Seetaler Alps in the adventure region Murtal: from alpine bushes to stone pine forests and in between soothing cirque lakes.
The Seetaler Alps in the Murtal adventure region live up to their name on the eastern side: nine cirques and seven cirque lakes (Wildsee, Großer and Kleiner Winterleitensee, Frauenlacke, Lavantsee, Ochsenlacke, Lindersee) lie embedded in this glacially shaped mountain landscape of Upper Styria. The highest peak of the Seetal Alps is the Zirbitzkogel (2396 m), which attracts numerous hikers in summer and winter. With this tip we present you the "little brother" of the Zirbitzkogel, which is an attractive peak with a sea level of 2306 meters and scores with three cirque lakes during the ascent and descent. For some time now, the alpine bush has also been blooming, transforming the slopes into fields of pink flowers and making the heart of every hiker beat faster.

More information

We start at the large parking lot below the Winterleitenhütte. After a few meters uphill we come to the Naturfreundehaus Winterleiten (1782 m) and can already see our destination, the Kreiskogel, in front of us. We keep to the left and follow the trail around the lake, which leads directly to the Großer Winterleitensee (1840 m). The clearly visible path leads over the stream, past a small wooden house and further along the hiking trail 315a over the broad mountain ridge to the Ochsenlacke trail junction. A little later we reach the summit area of the Kreiskogel (2306 m). We choose the descent via the steeper trail in the direction of Ochsenlacke and continue leisurely downhill along the cirque floors back to the starting point.
Getting accurate information about the mountain weather in advance is one of the basics of preparing for a tour. Numerous weather apps are available, although you should distinguish between professional sources and "popular" sources. We recommend the homepage of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (www.zamg.ac.at) with the mountain weather for Styria. If you need a more accurate forecast, you can take advantage of the ZAMG's fee-based consultation service (tel. +43 900 566 566 8).
