Tonnerhütte-Zirbitzkogel

Closed
Beautiful, worthwhile ski tour, which is made much easier by the lift aid.
The Zirbitzkogel offers a wonderful view of the Hohe Tauern, the entire Niedere Tauern, the Eisenerzer Alps, the Seckau Alps, the Hochschwab, the Stubalpe, the Koralpe, the Saualpe, the Steiner Alps, the Julian Alps in Slovenia and deep insights into the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park.

From the town center of Mühlen by car or taxi on the access road via Jakobsberg to the Tonnerhütte, 1,594m.

Starting from the Tonnerhütte you can take a drag lift to the Hohe Hald. From the mountain station you walk slightly uphill towards the Zirbitz summit. At the signpost next to a striking large stone, the two ascent variants separate via the so-called (SW) gully and the ascent via the winter markings. From this prominent point, it turns to the NE and after just a few 100 m leads out of the sparse spruce and larch trees into the tree-free area. We follow the clearly visible marker poles over the now steeper alpine pastures to the rocky area. Follow the marker poles further through rocky, steeper terrain towards the east until you reach the Mühlner Sattel, north of the summit. From here it is now possible to climb to the right (SE) directly to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel or to follow the marking poles over the saddle further east and climb up via the Zirbitzkogel refuge.

The way back is via the ascent route or the SW channel to the Herter Höhe. On the descent of the ski lift continue to the Tonnerhütte.

A stop at the refuge is recommended (as long as the hut is open!).
