St. Margaret

Teufenbach-Katsch

The fountain "St. Margaretha" was created by the artist Rudolf Hirt. He lives in Scheifling and has already completed several artistic works in the municipality.

Margaret was the daughter of a pagan priest in Antioch. Her beloved mother unfortunately died at an early age, whereupon a wet nurse took over her upbringing. The nurse was a Christian herself and introduced Margaretha to Christianity. When her father found out about this, he was very angry and sent his daughter into exile. Margaretha now had to herd sheep. One day, the prefect Olybrius saw her and immediately fell in love with her. He demanded that she be brought to him. However, Margaretha refused his proposal, and when Olybrius ordered her to renounce her faith, she defied the order. Olybrius then had her thrown into prison. She had to endure terrible tortures. She was beaten with rods and her flesh was torn from her body with combs. After she had been taken to the dungeon, she was overcome with fear.

Suddenly, a large dragon appeared and wanted to devour her. Margaretha fought back as long as her strength lasted. In desperation, she made the sign of the cross over the beast and put her foot on the top of its head. The dragon was the devil, who now wailed loudly that he had been defeated by a virgin. Suddenly the prison shone brightly and Margaret was filled with heavenly power. The next day, beautiful and strengthened, she was again led by the prefects, who asked her once more to sacrifice to the idols. She refused again. Olybrius then ordered her to be burned with red-hot torches and then thrown into a vat of cold water. However, she emerged unharmed.

When the people heard about this miracle, they professed their Christian faith, but they were all beheaded shortly afterwards. The judge feared that more would be converted to Christianity and so he had Margaret beheaded too. Shortly before her death, she prayed for her persecutors and for those who would celebrate her memory and call on her name in their distress. A church was soon built over her tomb in Antioch. Through the crusaders, the saint also became known in the West.

The fountain is located at the crossroads near the Gasthof Dorfwirt in Teufenbach.
