Castle Murau

Murau

The castle above Murau stands out as a landmark. Murau would not have become what it is today without the formative castle and its history: a cultural, lively center with European values.

Fancy a short trip into the past? The castle, which was first mentioned in 1250, was long owned by the Liechtenstein family. Until 1617, when the widow Anna Neumann von Wasserleonburg married the young Imperial Count Georg Ludwig zu Schwarzenberg in her sixth marriage. He had the castle demolished in 1628 and built the castle in its present form. Since then, the Schwarzenbergs have owned the dominion of Murau.

Currently, Prince Karel Schwarzenberg, the former Czech foreign minister and honorary chairman of the opposition Czech party TOP 09, is the owner of the estate and has close ties with the town. Today, Murau Castle houses the Schwarzenberg forestry administration, the castle museum and the Schwarzenberg archives. In the castle museum, you can breathe history and marvel. In the Picture Gallery, the Kitchen, the Knights' Hall, the Cat Hall, the Dungeon and the Chapel you will get an impression of life in the castle, the history of the family and the reign. A highlight is the princely tapestry collection with its elaborately embroidered and decorated tapestries. You can only visit the castle on the guided tours on offer (guided tours for children are also possible).
