Following in the footsteps of the minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein, Anna Neumann, and the princely house of Schwarzenberg, you embark on an exciting journey to the historical places of the old town of Murau.

As early as the 12th century, there was likely a small settlement of merchants around the Church of St. Egidius in Murau, as some elements of the building indicate its founding during this time.

According to tradition, the area around Murau was known as Luba in the early Middle Ages. This may relate to the naming by Slavic settlers, but there are no reliable indications for this. The first documentary mention of Murau as Murowe, however, dates back to 1250.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein founded a market around 1270 at the foot of today's Schlossberg. This location appeared more advantageous in terms of terrain than around the church in St. Egidius and was also protected by the castle, which had already been built in 1250. People settled around; various incentives were offered, such as exchanging their old residence for a new one. The settlers were assigned wood and grazing rights in the nearby area, thus providing them not only with material for building their houses but also with a basis for their livestock farming. The new settlement had its core around today’s Schillerplatz (main square), which was then called Friday Market and was completed around 1298.
