Ice Age - Down through the ground moraine

The circular trail "Down through the ground moraine" leads through the area between Oberdorf and Mariahof. Due to the force and influence of the debris flow glacier, gently shaped hills, valleys and wetlands were formed, which today characterize the landscape of the pass. Several experience points along the way show the formation of these landscape forms.
The landscape of the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park owes its present appearance to the processes of the Ice Age. About 10,500 years ago, the last cold period of the Ice Age ended. The mighty ice masses of that time shaped the Neumarkt Pass landscape as well as the high valley of St. Lambrecht in a lasting way. However, the temperature fluctuations also led to drastic changes in fauna, flora and man.

On the EISZEIT island in Oberdorf (Mariahof) the different topics can be understood and marveled at. On the ICE TIME ISLAND the most important topics about the ice age as well as the landscape-shaping effect of the debris flow glacier in the nature park are shown by information boards and some interactive stations. Thus, the ICE TIME ISLAND in Oberdorf not only serves as an information platform, but is also the starting point for the two circular hiking trails " Down through the ground moraine" and "The glacier in the dead end". In St. Lambrecht the circular trail "Eisstausee St. Lambrecht" invites you to follow the traces of the ice age. Information boards have been erected which tell about the glacial processes. Three circular trails and the "Geocache" experience lead through the landscape shaped by the ice age and show forms of erosion and filling as well as the legacies of a mighty 5 km long ice reservoir.

The circular trail leads from the EISZEIT island counterclockwise along a glacially formed valley hollow in the direction of Vockenberg. Shortly before you reach the Vockenberg, you can see the Seetaler Alps and get an idea of the extent of the maximum glaciation at the station "Vereisungsgrenze". From Vockenberg you go downhill through the forest to the adventure point "Furtnerteich" (watch out for the railroad crossing!). You walk along the shore and branch off to the right into the forest. After a short up and down you cross the main road towards Hoferdorf and Mariahof. Climbing the church hill of Mariahof, you are rewarded with an "ICE TIME panorama" towards the west. Shortly after Mariahof the path branches off to the right and after a forest section you come to a grazed meadow, from the end of which strangely shaped humps can be seen at the "Rundhöcker" adventure point. The signposting leads through Adendorf to the main road, where after crossing the railroad again, you turn left and walk along the railroad to the station "Auf der Grundmoräne" - exciting insights await you! The trail leads uphill through Schachen and shortly after the beginning of the forest the trail branches off to the right in a bend. The last ascent leads to an elongated ridge with the station "Eisfließrichtung" at the highest point. On the subsequent descent, the EISZEIT island can already be glimpsed from afar.
Ideal for families! Be sure to allow plenty of time to view the many interesting glacial experience points along the loop trail.
