We start at Teichwirt Urani and initially ride on the toll road (also open to cars) to Kohlebnerstand. The first part of the tour is also the steepest, but we are rewarded with an amazing view of the Rax, which rises impressively just to the east of us. Ahead, we can already see the transmitter mast – a good sign: we have nearly reached the plateau. However, we make a short stop at the transmitter, as this spot offers a beautiful panoramic view, stretching as far as the Dachstein to the west.
Just after the mast, on the left side, is the unmanaged Kutatschhütte, and to the right, there's a cozy resting spot. Now, it's only a few more elevation meters until we reach the plateau.
Upon reaching the top, we enjoy the impressive view of the 1 km² Schneealm plateau and its diverse flora. Here, we can decide whether to make a detour to Schneealpenhaus, where we'll be well taken care of, or continue along the route to Lurgbauerhütte, to sample the cheese specialties from their own organic alpine dairy.
After a good meal, we hop back on our bikes and ride the same gravel road back towards the parking lot at Teichwirt Urani. We stay on the gravel road to avoid disturbing the delicate balance of the alpine nature and wildlife habitats.
Once back in the valley, a dip in the refreshing water of the natural swimming pond at Teichwirt Urani is a hidden gem!
Attention: The Schneealmstraße is only accessible from April 15th to October!
