Urani Mountain Biking Loop
The starting point of this tour is the former train station in Kapellen. Following the Preiner Gschaid road, we ride to the former Gasthof Ulm, where we turn left towards Altenberg. Continuing straight, we reach the Hanslgrabner ascent and pass through the property.
From here, the route climbs steeply to the highest point, "Auf der Öd". We then continue on the Knappensteig (a forest road) until we reach the junction with the Schneealm toll road, where we begin our descent to the Michlbauer organic farm.
After passing through the Michlbauer estate, we follow the road to the Teichwirt Urani. The R5 cycling route then takes us back to our starting point in Kapellen, where we can end the tour at the Röststation Johann.

We start our Mountain Biking Loop in the Kapellen district at the former train station, now home to Röststation Johann, where ample parking is available.
Following the Preiner Gschaid road, we ride to the former Gasthaus Ulm, where we turn left towards Altenberg. Shortly before the town sign, we find the ascent to the Hanslgrabner family farm on the left. We follow this steep asphalt road up to the Hanslgrabner estate.
Halfway up, a drinking water fountain on the right offers a chance to refresh and prepare for the upcoming elevation gain. Energized, we climb steeply once more to reach the highest point of our tour: "Auf der Öd". Here, a beautiful rest area invites us to take a break and regain strength.
We then continue on the Knappensteig (a forest road) until we reach the junction with the Schneealm toll road, where we descend towards the Michlbauer farm (caution: barrier ahead!). This road is frequently used by cars in summer, so extra caution is needed.
Before returning to the main road and the R5 cycling route, we make a quick stop at Teichwirt Urani for a refreshing dip in the natural swimming pond and a small snack.
We leisurely conclude the tour on the R5 back to Kapellen and treat ourselves to a delicious coffee specialty at Röststation Johann before heading home.
A short detour to Neuberg an der Mürz is highly recommended to visit the Kaiserhof Glass Manufactory.
At the demonstration glassblowing workshop, located within the Neuberg Monastery, visitors can watch the fascinating process of creating glass objects from molten glass—and even try it themselves. The adjacent showroom offers a chance to admire and purchase beautifully crafted glass items.
