Starting from the Gasthof Oberer Gesslbauer, Stanzer Dorfwirt, a wonderful circular trail leads through forests and meadows with magnificent panoramic views over the entire Stanzer Valley. On the way back, you can refresh yourself at the Stanzer natural swimming pond and dip your feet in the cool water.

We follow the yellow signposts, here the ‘WirteWanderWeg Dorfwirt’.

We start our hike at the Dorfwirt in the Hofgarten and walk straight ahead towards the Stanzbach, cross it at the bridge and come to a sandy road, which we follow to the bridge over the Hollersbach. We come to a forest road which we continue along. We keep right at the next junction and hike uphill. After a short ascent, we see a wayside shrine at a junction on the right, but we turn left onto an overgrown forest road, which leads us to a sandy road. Before we walk downhill on this road, we take a short break at the lovingly designed rest area with a wonderful view of the Stanztal valley and marvel at the insect hotel that has been set up here. Having rested, we now walk downhill along the sandy road, turning left, until we reach the tarmac road that leads to Brandstatt. We turn right and after a short while we come to a cross, where we turn left onto the sandy road. This leads us to a farm where the road passes through the farmyard. We continue along the sandy road and see a fountain with fresh spring water on the right-hand side. We continue walking uphill on the sandy road until a marvellous view of the Stanzertal valley opens up before us. We see the ‘Malburg natural bathing pond’, the two churches, the parish church of Katharina in the foreground and the Ulrichskirche a little further behind. Looking out over the valley, we see the Mürztal mountains and behind them the Hochschwab region. We continue on and catch sight of the Stanglalm with its wind turbines. We continue along the sandy road and after a short stretch turn left onto a forest path. Another fork soon follows, where we keep left again, slightly downhill. We follow the forest road and turn left downhill at the next three junctions and follow the forest road until we come to a small settlement, where we cross the Stanzbach stream and immediately turn left onto a meadow path that runs alongside the Stanzbach stream. We follow it until we reach a side road, where part of the Sonnenweg trail with its sculptures begins. We continue on, with the sports field on our right. Our path takes us over the bridge and we walk back along the path that runs alongside the Stanzbach stream until we reach the ‘Stanzer Naturbadeteich’. After a short break to watch the fish, we walk through the pond and can already see the bridge that takes us back to the other side of the Stanzbach. Here we keep to the left and then go straight through the alley on the right and return to the starting point of the hike.

Wonderful views of the valley, lovingly designed rest area with insect hotel, beautiful, quiet meadows and forest paths. The Dorfwirt is one of the quaint, cosy inns that invite you to stop off after your hike. Regional delicacies from the StreuObstRegion are served.

The hiking trail is also perfect for a coach group with a stop at the Oberer Gesslbauer inn afterwards.

Take the regional trains to Kindberg station, more information at www.oebb.at and continue with the Postbus to Stanz.
