Stanz-Brandstatt-Hochschlag

From Brandstatt, follow the beautiful and varied trail no. 738 to the Stanzbergerhöhe and Maißhöhe, continuing on to the Hochschlag summit. The landscape along the way is shaped by traditional alpine pasture farming.

Starting from Brandstatt, a side valley of Stanz, a beautiful and varied hiking trail (no. 738) leads to the Stanzbergerhöhe and Maißhöhe, and continues on to the Hochschlag summit. Once there, you can either return the same way or follow trail no. 740 via the Ebenschlag to the Hofbaueralm, where a stop is well worth it.

Enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Niedere Tauern, the Northern Limestone Alps, and the Stuhleck–Wechsel region. From the Hofbaueralm, you can descend either to Jasnitz/Allerheiligen or directly to Stanz via the Traßnitzgraben.

More information

Take the S6 (Semmering Expressway) to the Kindbergdörfl exit. From there, turn left toward Stanz, drive through the village, and at the end of the village turn right at the junction marked “Brandstatt.”

Shortly after crossing the fourth bridge over the stream, you’ll reach the road fork “Retschgraben/Dickenbach,” where a yellow sign points toward “Strasshof/Hochschlag.” A little further on, turn right at the signposted junction for “Schwaiggraben.”
Parking is available along the roadside next to the stream.

At the fork marked “Retschgraben/Dickenbach”, follow the yellow sign “Strasshof/Hochschlag” and pass through a farmyard until you reach the edge of the forest, where another signpost and the beginning of a marked trail await.

The markings lead uphill, first through the forest on a sunken path, then across several stiles and pasture sections. The route mostly follows the ridge, eventually reaching a wooden signpost marked “Strassegg” to the right. Here, the trail briefly bends right, then immediately left again, continuing gently uphill as a meadow path.

Follow the waymarks as the trail climbs across an open pasture crest, then, after another stile, continues straight ahead (do not turn left downhill toward “Posegg”) until reaching a signposted trail junction. At this point, turn sharply right and follow the yellow sign “Hochschlag/Rennfeld.” The markings lead gently downhill to a saddle, then uphill again along the ridge through light woodland.

After crossing another stile, turn sharply right and follow the fence line steeply uphill, where you’ll soon spot further waymarks. These lead leftward into the forest, where the trail becomes clearly visible again. A slanting climb over a meadow is followed by a forest track that returns to the ridge. From there, the marked path leads steeply uphill to the summit of Hochschlag.

Stopping at the Hofbaueralm adds that extra something to the hiking experience!

Unfortunately, “Retschgraben/Dickenbach” is not accessible by public transport.
