Semmering Cycling Route R46
From Mürzzuschlag along the Fröschnitz to the Spital am Semmering sports ground, continue on the ‘Alte Reichsstraße’ to Steinhaus am Semmering, where the ascent begins before you reach the top of the Semmering pass.
Let the bikes roll down from the Semmering into the Mürztal and leave the ascent to the railway - that sounds good and not too difficult. Touring cyclists take the R46, the Semmering cycle path, and then after 13 km in Mürzzuschlag continue on the R5, the Mürztal cycle path, towards Bruck/Mur, starting on the Lower Austrian side and immediately making a steep loop up to the old villas that make up the nostalgic flair of the Semmering. Passing the bike park, where downhillers can be gondolaed up and then plunge into the depths, you reach Styrian ‘territory’.
The Semmering is still regarded as a traditional recreational landscape. Listed villas and hotels line the varied landscape. A special treat is the Semmering railway that runs here. The route and locomotive construction of the Semmering Railway are considered milestones in railway history. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
