From Neuberg an der Mürz, follow the Schlapferweg (please be sure to observe parking regulations and no-parking zones) upwards until you reach a sculpture (Forest Art). Continue along the forest road until you reach a low hunting stand, then proceed to a real hunting stand with rocks. Here, opposite the stand, the hunting trail toward the Rauhenstein ridge begins.
Soon, you will encounter a wire fence (stone marker, black and white property boundary marking). Continue on the hunting trail and at a rock wall, sharply turn left upwards (partly off-trail) toward the ridge and a meadow (hunting stand). This will lead you to the entrance of the Rauhensteinkamm.
Now, ascend over rocks with easy climbing until the slope becomes steeper. You will encounter a somewhat tricky (loose rock, I - II) traverse to the right, directly onto the ridge. From there, continue with beautiful climbing to the high plateau and the summit of Rauhenstein.
From there, slightly right (east, orientation can be tricky in fog), go through bush corridors to the hiking trail on Schneealm. You can either descend directly via the "Farfel" back to the starting point or, preferably, continue across the high plateau to the 1,903m high Windberg, with fantastic views. From there, descend via the comfortable Michlbauerhütte and Schneealpenhaus, and return to the entrance of the Farfelsteig, following the same route back to the starting point.
