From the parking lot, we initially follow the wide forest path (marked) towards Hinteralm until we reach the so-called 'Eisernes Törl'. Some forest road bends can be shortened slightly by taking short forest trails. At the Eisernes Törl, we turn right and come to the so-called 'Durchfall', a karst formation where surface water seeps into the rock. From here, we continue slightly to the right, passing the natural gem 'Naßköhr - Moor', and follow a wide forest road until we reach Bodenalm.
If we want to summit the peaks of Donnerwand and small Waxenegg, we now follow the eastward path towards Großbodenalm. Here, we take a left turn onto a trail heading north, and then northwest towards the ascent of Donnerwand (the trail is sometimes difficult to identify, 1,799 m, summit cross, be mindful of rock cliffs!) and/or the summit of small Waxenegg (1,682 m).
The return journey follows the ascent path.
