Ochsenhimmel-Herzogberg

An appealing family hike with scenic attractions, where nature and adventure are not neglected. ‘It's like heaven here!’ the parish priest of St. Lorenzen once said when he looked at the beauty of the Ochsenhöhe. The name has remained, as has the beauty of the landscape.

This hike is not considered technically difficult, but the length of the route requires sufficient fitness. As the ascents are on a forest road, i.e. easy to walk on and not too steep, it is also suitable for families. Once you reach the Kochboden (shortcut possible), you can enjoy great views on a clear day. After a refreshment stop at the Kochhütte, the trail descends to the Ochsenhimmelkreuz. Here you have the opportunity to admire the beauty of this alpine landscape, which even impressed the parish priest of St. Lorenzen, who said: ‘It's like heaven here!’ The rest of the descent is partly on forest roads and forest paths.

More information

Take the S6, Semmering motorway to the Allerheiligen/Mürzhofen exit - turn right towards Mürzhofen.

Starting from the municipal office in Mürzhofen, we take Wiener Straße in the direction of Hadersdorf. After the Turmwirt inn, turn left into Alte Poststraße, then turn right and follow the country lane to the Zöscher farm in Althadersdorf. We cross the bridge over the Lambach and follow the road to the left, which leads into the ditch of the same name. On the way to the highest point of this tour, the Kochhütte (1100 m), we pass the Lammer, Bigaunzer and Kochboden farmsteads (shortcut: left, along the road, past the Ullmanner farmstead, saving approx. 1 hour) as well as the Koch and Trippl farmsteads. From the Kochhütte we turn right over the Stiegl (fence) to the Ochsenhimmelkreuz. We then climb back over the Stiegl and follow the signposts to the Hinter-Buchrieser farmstead. We walk past the farmstead, along the road that leads us into the Mürzgraben. At the bottom, we turn left, where path 458 also runs, and walk leisurely out of the Mürzgraben to the starting point of the tour.

Catering establishments in Mürzhofen and the Kochhütte (weekends only).
