This hike is a true local classic – without famous peak names or dramatic mountain shapes, but instead peaceful, scenic, and on weekends enriched with culinary stops at the Töllamoaralm (open Sundays only) and the Kochhütte.
You start at the Pölzl Alpine Inn, also known as the 'Schwammerlwirt', and head north along the former ski slope and well-marked forest trails to the Maurer Cross. At the trail junction (signposts), take the gently ascending path slightly to the right, which gradually becomes steeper and leads to the 1,468-meter Troiseck summit (summit cross, bench; approx. 1.5 hours from the Pölzl inn).
Return the same way back to the Maurer Cross, and then follow a forest road to the Töllamoaralm near the Töllamoarkogel. After a break, continue southward from the alpine hut for about five minutes uphill (do not head toward Pogusch!) until you reach the prominent pilgrimage cross. From there, an unmarked forest road branches off to the right and leads you in the direction of Herzogberg (do not descend right into the Töllamoargraben valley). Several wooden signposts help guide the way.
Where the forest road suddenly ends (about 30–45 minutes from the Töllamoaralm), a short trail turns left through a wooded section and leads directly to a scenic meadow with the Kochhütte. Just a few meters south of the hut, you’ll find the Ochsenhimmel Cross – offering a stunning view across the Mürz Valley.
For the return, head back from the Kochhütte via a forest road to the Trippel farm. Just before the farmhouse, a path turns left across a meadow to a pasture gate below a large solar panel array. From there, follow the forest road, which runs nearly level, and finally a paved road back to your starting point at the Pölzl Alpine Inn.
