Sledging in a snow paradise with sweet refreshments

Aflenz

With the sledge in hand, you can come to rest step by step in the untouched and deep-snow nature of the Aflenz Bürgeralm.

The sunny, spacious alpine pasture area and natural snow paradise of Aflenzer Bürgeralm is easily reached from Aflenz with the double chairlift. You hike across the alpine pasture and along the prepared sledge run for about an hour to the Schönleitenhaus at 1,810 metres above sea level. Once at the top, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Hochschwab massif and the surrounding mountains. Incidentally, this is the area with the most chamois in Europe - so with a bit of luck you can marvel at roe deer, chamois & co. at close quarters.

Culinary delights at Schönleitenhaus include Kaiserschmarren made by Hermi, the innkeeper. It tastes even better with the wonderful view from the sunny balcony. Then it's back downhill on the sledge towards the starting point, around seven kilometres on a prepared downhill road. If you don't have a sledge, that's no problem either. Rental toboggans are available at the mountain station for a small fee.

Winter resort tip: Before arriving in the valley, it is worth making a detour to the Almrauschhütte. Here you should definitely try the Fedlkoch: Formerly a dish for the "Holterbuam", Fedlkoch is now a popular dish at the alpine huts in Hochsteiermark. A sweet dish made of cream and semolina, refined with sugar, cinnamon and sultanas. The cabin hostesses serve a fresh cup of coffee along with it.
