The Pillhofer Sculpture Hall

The Pillhofer sculpture hall in Neuberg an der Mürz houses drawings and sculptures of one of Austria's most important sculptors. The hall built by Josef Pillhofer also serves as a temporary venue for concerts and theater performances in the context of visual arts. Pillhofer's work is presented in changing exhibitions in the sculpture hall - an extraordinary place in an ideal setting.

The artist Josef Pillhofer

Josef Pillhofer (born June 1, 1921 in Vienna; died July 30, 2010) began his studies between 1938 and 1941 at the Graz School of Applied Arts with Wilhelm Gösser and Rudolf Szyszkowitz. Interrupted by the Second World War, he received his most important impulses between 1947 and 1950 as a student of Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Here he came into contact with Cubism and got to know the work of Pablo Picasso mainly on a scholarship in Paris, where he studied under Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grand Chaumière. So Josef Pillhofer always remained true to the human figure, but reduced its forms more and more and almost completely dissolved their shape in geometric bodies.
