Neuberg an der Mürz

A journey of discovery through the animal world of all continents ...

Behind the thick monastery walls in the schoolyard of the former Cistercian monastery, visitors are greeted by a colorful and instructive world of animals: trophies, specimens in natural dioramas and butterflies are waiting to be discovered.

Designed by the collector Herbert Schliefsteiner himself, the nature museum gives an insight into the diversity of the animal world.

Birds, mammals, reptiles and the colorful world of butterflies invite you to marvel, enjoy and understand. Many of the animals shown have already become rare, so that the museum also offers stimulation to reflect on our endangered environment.

Prof. Schliefsteiner was not only known as an important collector of animal trophies, he was also a gifted draftsman and painter. His landscape, animal and plant illustrations are featured in numerous textbooks and publications.

In 2021, the Neuberg Nature Museum was transferred from the Schliefsteiner family to the market town of Neuberg an der Mürz and the Naturpark Mürzer Oberland. A concept for the modernization and reorganization of the museum's content is in development and is expected to be implemented in 2023.
