1937: HOW IT ALL BEGAN:
Richard and Maurice open their first drive-in restaurant in San Bernardion, California. The menu includes hot dogs and milkshakes, which so-called "carhops" - employees with roller skates - bring the guests directly to the parking lot.
1955: RAY KROC TAKES OVER:
A kitchen appliance salesman named Ray Kroc visited the McDonald brothers because he was curious about a larger order. The McDonald brothers sell the exclusive marketing rights to Ray Kroc. In 1955 he opened his first McDonald's restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois.
1961: RAY KROX BECOMES SOLE OWNER:
"Speedee", introduced in 1948 as an advertising symbol for fast service, is replaced by the Golden Arches as the official company logo.
1966: RONALD MCDONALD APPEARS ON THE STAGE:
The legendary Ronald McDonald corporate figure made his first appearance on US television. Did he have stage fright?
1967: THE BIG MAC IS INVENTED:
An invention that is second to none! Jim Dellegatti, Pittsburgh franchisee, invents the Big Mac. Today it is used as a worldwide purchasing power indicator, has its own song "The Ballad of Big Mac" and is just unbelievably good.
1968: SPORT & McDONALD'S
During the 1968 Winter Olympics, McDonald's flew hamburgers to Grenoble, France for the U.S. athletes after they said they'd missed McDonald's food. Since then, the company has served menus to millions of athletes, coaches, their families and fans.
1977: McDONALD'S COMES TO AUSTRIA:
Hello McDonald's: Austria's first McDonald's restaurant opens on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna.
