The Future of Winter Sports in Austria Skiing is culture and cultural heritage, fun and freedom, the “coolest” thing – not only in Austria but for millions of snow enthusiasts from all over the world. In Alpine valleys, the winter sports industry has made many people rich. However, the excessive use of the mountains is showing dramatic consequences for plant and animal life. Does winter sports still have a future? This is the question that environmental and science journalist Laura Anninger has asked. She has been in lecture halls and gondolas, speaking with activists, glaciologists, and economic sociologists. As an important economic factor, the winter sports industry does not want to give up without a fight and is relying on technology, optimism, and events, while the global temperature rise continuously forces ski resorts to their knees. However, her outlook into the future is also encouraging, as many are already committed to a rethink. If we want future generations to be able to ski and snowboard, we must implement consistent climate protection and promote ecological tourism.
