Eisenerz

The museum takes visitors into a world where the miracle of Christ's birth is made visible. Wrapped in the scent of incense, more than 50 nativity scenes and sacred exhibits provide an insight into the art of nativity scenes from the 18th century to the present day.

In the design, special emphasis was, and still is, placed on the variety of nativity scenes. Strongly represented is the local nativity scene with the reference to the ore mountain and its minerals. The premises extend over three floors in which the furnishings are thematically different.
For example, in the former cellar vault there is a replica of a tunnel from the Erzberg. The main piece inside is a representation of the Holy Family by Johann Seitner, where Mary wears the local burgher's dress and Joseph kneels at the manger in the "miner's costume". The background is a backdrop picture of the market town of Eisenerz, painted by Sepp Steier, as it looked two hundred years ago.

Particularly noteworthy is a miner's nativity scene in a wooden shrine with wax figures and precious minerals from the Erzberg in the decoration. The mining and metallurgical tradition, against the backdrop of the Erzberg and a wheel mill, can be seen in the panoramic crib made by Egon Machaczek Jr. A special unique piece is probably the scenery crib of Sepp Steier. Numerous pictures of Eisenerz and its surroundings in winter form the background. In between there are also machines and equipment from the everyday working life at Erzberg. The crib actors are people from his family, his friends, but also personalities from the city of Eisenerz. The range of cribs on display extends from historically valuable collector's items to those cribs that were created during crib-building courses in recent years in the workshop in Eisenerz.

As an integral part of the cultural landscape of Eisenerz, the association organizes various events as well as crib building courses for interested people.

Even the smallest visitors can experience a special feature in the Nativity Museum - a petting nativity scene made of foam especially for children. The figures are dressed in local costumes.
